I think this will be the last on A-Rod, but maybe tomorrow it will come out that it was bong that Michael Phelps smoked from. In reference to the last paragraph in Pat’s recent post where he discussed the irrational Yankee fan dissonance from reality when it comes to Jeter and A-Rod: I couldn’t agree more. The Jeter argument is so cliche and has been analyzed over and over, Yankee fans would drink his sweat and everyone else probably goes a little overboard in making him sound worse than he is. But I wanted to pass along this line from a recent column in my home town paper, The Journal News. Columnist Rick Carpiniello is discussing steroids and contemplating turning in his HOF vote because there’s no way to know who was actually on drugs yadda yadda yadda (although this is precisely why guys like Bonds, Clemens, and McGwire should be in). But then he throws out this doozy which describes the  Yankee Fan’s love affair with Cap’n Jet perfectly. 

Shocked? You should not be for many reasons, starting with nobody who gets outed as a drug-cheat should ever shock us anymore. I have a list of two names left, two who would make me fall off my chair if it ever were divulged that they took steroids or HGH or whatever. One is Derek Jeter. I could never believe he’d do that.

I love that last sentence. So even if Carpiniello walked in on Jeter with a syringe, he would just start ripping his own eyeballs out for lying to him. Nothing against Jeter, but if he were ever uncovered as a user, the ensuing commotion across Yankee land should be broadcast on every channel for everyone’s enjoyment.
