Pat’s Second Round of Picks

05Mar09

MVC

First Round: Drake over Indiana State, Wichita State over Missouri State

Second Round: Northern Iowa over Drake, SIU over Bradley, Illinois State over Evansville, Creighton over Wichita State

Semifinals: Northern Iowa over SIU, Creighton over Illinois State

Champion: Creighton

Random Thoughts: This conference isn’t as good as it’s been in past years, so while I’m not a big fan of Creighton either, I have to agree with Bo that they’ll be able to pull this out.

NEC

First Round: Robert Morris over St. Francis, Quinnipiac over LIU, Sacred Heart over CCSU, Mt. St. Mary’s over Wagner

Semifinals: Robert Morris over Quinnipiac, Mt. St. Mary’s over Sacred Heart

Champion: Robert Morris

Random Thoughts: I went pretty chalk because I know this is a higher seed plays at home tournament and I know nothing else about this conference.

America East

First Round: Maine over Hartford

Second Round: Binghamton over Maine, Stony Brook over New Hampshire, BU over UMBC, Vermont over Albany

Semifinals: Binghamton over Stony Brook, Vermont over BU

Champion: Binghamton

Random Thoughts: Again I’m going with the #1 seed, but here it’s a little less chalkish. Vermont is probably the best team in this conference, but they’ve lost two tough games against Binghamton this year and unfortunately for them, that means the championship game would be at Binghamton if they both get there. So going with the homecourt advantage here. Also I used to go watch this tournament every year because it was always at UDel when they were in the conference. Delware, Hofstra, and Drexel would pretty much destroy these teams every year, to the point where they left the conference. So in my mind, these teams will always blow.

CAA

First Round: Georgia State over Delaware, Hofstra over UNCW, Drexel over Towson, JMU over William & Mary

Second Round: VCU over Georgia State, Hofstra over ODU, Drexel over Northeastern, GMU over JMU

Semifinals: Hofstra over VCU, GMU over Drexel

Champion: George Mason

Random Thoughts: I’ve actually seen a few of these teams play, but I think that may actually hurt me here because I’m basing a lot on 1 game or less. Whatever. These are my picks. Deal with it.

MAAC

First Round: Loyola over Canisius, Iona over Marist

Second Round: Siena over Loyola, Manhattan over Fairfield, Rider over St. Peter’s, Niagara over Iona

Semifinals: Siena over Manhattan, Niagara over Rider

Champion: Siena

Random Thoughts: First I want to point out that when Bo says this conference is near and dear to his heart, he means it, I once caught him jerking off to pictures of Ricky Solliver and Luis Flores. That said, I agree that a Niagara/Siena would be one of the better games in all of tournament week. I’ve only seen Siena once but I like them a lot, so they’re my pick here and probably in round 1 of the NCAA tournament as well (although that would be one of those “upsets” that everyone picks).

WCC

First Round: San Diego over LMU, Pepperdine over San Francisco

Second Round: Santa Clara over San Diego, Portland over Pepperdine

Semifinals: Gonzaga over San Diego, St. Mary’s over Portland

Champion: St. Mary’s

Random Thoughts: With Patty Mills playing, I think St. Mary’s has what it takes to knock off Gonzaga. No other team in this conference is relevant.

Southern

First Round: App State over Georgia Southern, College of Charleston over UNCG, Wofford over Elon, Samford over Furman

Second Round: Davidson over App State, College of Charleston over WCU, Chattanooga over Wofford, Citadel over Samford

Semifinals: Davidson over College of Charleston, Citadel over Chattanooga

Champion: Davidson

Random Thoughts: So this is one of those two divisions leagues and they seed by division. The problem with this is that this year it seems that all the best teams are in the same division, which makes for a pretty screwed up bracket. I do hate Davidson and I hope they lose. They’re overhyped, overrated, and barely mediocre; but they’re not even in a mid-major, they’re in a 13-15 seed type conference, so I have to think they find a way to get it done.
