Most Overrated: I don’t even know where to begin with this region, as several of the most overrated teams in the tournament reside here. If we’re going strictly by seed then certainly I’d say Illinois. They were never very good to begin with and now their PG’s hurt, so in my mind, Western Kentucky is the favorite in that game. I also think Syracuse is overseeded after getting a ton of pub last week, but they are a solid team, so I’ll leave them alone for now. Clemson is playing terrible basketball, and will probably lose to a well coached Michigan team. Arizona State has been oversold all year, but I can live with them at the 6, which brings me to my most overrated team: Oklahoma. Now, a month ago I would’ve called them the most overrated team in the country, though now their expectations are a bit down after a sluggish finish. Still, I don’t think they’re one of the top 10 teams in the country and I’d expect them to lose the first time they play a good team (and luckily for them that would probably not be until the sweet 16).

Most Underrated: Gonzaga. I think most people realize they’re good, but there’s really no other option in this bracket unless you love Butler or LSU. If Lawson isn’t healthy if and when Carolina meets up with Gonzaga than I would fully expect the Zags to play them right to the wire and potentially knock them out. As I indicated above, I hate most of the rest of this bracket, so I would guess that matchup decides the South’s Final Four representative.

Potential First Round Upsets: I’ll stick with WKU and Clemson as my only ones in this region. I think Temple certainly has a puncher’s chance, but I don’t think highly enough of them to actually pick them.

“Who gives a shit?”: Illinois-WKU

“Holy fuck. That guy’s good”: I’m going to go with Willie Warren of Oklahoma. I know that’s counterintuitive as I just skewered his team, and now I’m promoting their second best player, but I think he’s the one guy who could really surpise some people. Everyone is obviously familiar with Griffin and the Carolina guys. Warren is a likely lottery pick should he come out this year, and also one of the more explosive scoring guards in the counry.

“Holy fuck. That guy sucks”:Austin Johnson. Another Oklahoma guy. He has shown flashes of brilliance at times this year, but overall his inconsistency has been one of the biggest problems for his team. As Jason Whitlock pointed out, they’re poorly coached and really have no offensive system, so it should give Johnson the freedom to kill this team at some point in this tournament.
