Bo’s Ultimate Wrestlemania

03May09

First, in response to the ongoing argument about how we should be building our cards. I’m not disputing that I would have drafted differently if I was trying to sell the most tickets and PPV shares. Like Pat said, the vast majority of wrestling fans are trailer-trash loser morons who just want to see people bleed and hope that someone’s boob pops out. I’ve tried to illuminate this before but I guess I just haven’t done a good enough job. I’m drafting for myself, not to sell out the arena in Birmingham, Alabama. I don’t really give a shit who they want to see most, this is my Ultimate Wrestlemania and I’m picking the wrestling card I would most want to see. It’s MY Ultimate Wrestlemania, I’m not playing Vince McMahon. That’s why my comments on rather seeing a Hoffman movie or The Wire are appropriate, because it’s about personal preference. Maybe it makes me sound like some sort of wrestling snob, but that’s fine. If I were to pay for a PPV, I’d rather pay for my lineup than Pat’s. So basically, this entire bullshit argument is based on a misunderstanding in draft philosophies. And it doesn’t make either of our point-of-views “misguided,” it just makes them different.

As for my thoughts on Pat’s Wrestlemania, I liked it a lot. With all the talent at our disposal, it would be pretty difficult not to put together a great Wrestlemania. I think that from Pat’s point f view of trying to sell the most tickets, he’s probably under-utilizing John Cena, who has become a legitimate star regardless of his ability in the ring. His TLC match would definitely bring the house down and has a good chance to steal the show. The other match on the card that truly would excite me would definitely be the IC match between Savage and Michaels, two of the better wrestlers of all-time. The Andre/Flair HIC would be entertaining, as would the main event I’m sure. I’m not so against Hogan that I would refuse to watch one of his matches, quite the contrary, I still enjoy the spectacle of it and he’s without a doubt a tremendous entertainer. I’d just rather watch some other guys ahead of him.

Now, onto my Ultimate Wrestlemania, emphasis on my.

The Dudley Boyz vs. The Steiner Brothers (for a shot at the Tag Team belts) – Two high-quality tag teams battling it out for a chance at glory to start the show. The Dudleys are always exciting to watch and the Steiner Bro’s were a very fun tag team before Scott Steiner started taking more steroids than Jose Canseco and Ken Caminiti combined. As an aside, did everyone enjoy Scott’s appearance on E:60 this week?

Rob Van Dam vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. - Two guys with impressive high-flying movesets who can carry matches on their own. I believe they’ve probably worked together in the past, but I would expect this to be a quality 8-10 minute match worth watching.

JBL vs. Faarooq w/ Sunny – Two former tag team partners and one-time main eventers who had sort of opposite career planes. I have to say I’ve never been more surprised at wrestling than when I turned it on for the first time in about 3-5 years and JBL, who I knew as Bradshaw, was the world champion. Faarooq, or Ron Simmons, on the other hand was a much bigger star earlier in his career in both the WCW and then as the leader of the Nation of Domination.

Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon vs. Dusty Rhodes and Goldust - The old two generations tag team match maneuver. Goldust is easily the best wrestler of this bunch, and the All-American Dusty Rhodes will always have a special place in my heart for having one of my favorite entrance musics. As for the McMahons, they’re not particularly good wrestlers, but they’ve always been able to sell a story and I have to say that I’ve developed a soft spot for Shane McMahon over the years.

20-man Battle Royal for the Intercontinental Championship (Arn Anderson, Big Show, Bobby Lashley, Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake, CM Punk, Diamond Dallas Page, Earthquake, Goldberg, Jeff Jarrett, Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart, Jimmy Snuka, Kane (masked), Ken Shamrock, Mabel, Ravishing Rick Rude, Tatanka, Typhoon, Vader, X-Pac, Yokozuna) – There’s a good chance the ring just collapses under the weight of all these big men, but I’d be looking forward to hearing the announcers decide which of the 7 or so mammoths is the “favorite” to win this battle royal. There’s a lot of directions this match could go, and there’s only about 4 or 5 guys who would have no chance at all of winning (I’m looking at you Typhoon). I would have liked to get a few of these guys – Rude, Jarrett, Vader, Yoko, Big Show – in their own spotlight matches but I think the stakes of this match are big enough to make it worth their while. And say what you will about Goldberg’s wrestling ability, but I think his effect is maximized in a match like this where he can simply use his brute strength to be effective against all the big guys in the ring. The same can be said for Lashley and Shamrock, and X-Pac, CM Punk, and Snuka each bring their own lighter wrinkles to this Battle Royal.

Tag Team Championship Match: New Age Outlawz (c) vs. Demolition – O, you didn’t know the New Age Outlawz were gonna be my tag champs? Well, before yo’ ass calls somebody, recognize that the Outlawz are perhaps the most entertaining tag team of all-time, and a lot of it has to do with their mic skills. That being said, they’re both solid wrestlers, more specifically very good tag team wrestlers which requires a slightly different skill set. And they work very well together. As for Demolition, they were the favorite tag team of my youth (along with the Hart Foundation and the Rockers), and were another great tag team who carried the belts for a long period in the late 80′s and early 90′s. I’ll even forgive them for Smash becoming The Repo Man. This should be a high quality championship match between two of the best at their craft.

Million Dollar Championship match: Ted DiBiase (c) w/ Virgil vs. Triple H – I would imagine this to have been a very entertaining fued between two of the better talkers in WWF/E history. The Million Dollar man was a great heel during his prime and HHH has become one of the very best in wrestling history, no matter how much of his success is attributed to his marriage to Stephanie McMahon. Beyond their mic skills, both are highly proficient in the ring, and I think they could put on a great match in a rare title defense for DiBiase. And don’t worry about Virgil having broken up with his former boss, I’m pretty sure at this point in his life he’ll take whatever job he can get.

Money in the Bank ladder match for a future shot at the WWE Championship:  Mick Foley vs. Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Sabu vs. Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Owen Hart vs. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat: This one shapes up to be a real show-stealer. The MITB has become one of the most bankable matches in the the WWE today, and never fails to entertain. But with a crew this talented, it figures to take a step up. Foley is one of the best ever at selling opponents’ moves and would definitely be willing to take a few huge bumps in the match. Bam Bam is one of the more agile and acrobatic big men the WWE has ever had, and would work in very well here. Sabu, while not a classic WWE superstar, would figure to have the best chance at stealing the show by himself. He’s arguably one of the most entertaining match-to-match wrestlers of all-time. Piper is another great wrestler who would be able to sell the pyschology of this match extremely well. Owen is another guy who’s talent was never quite utilized to its fullest, save for his win over his brother ast Wrestlemania X. And Pat touched on it in his mention of the Macho Man that Steamboat already has one of the greatest Wrestlemania matches of all-time on his resumé, but he was truly a master of the ring. The other aspect of this match that appeals to me is that the MITB’s reward of a future title shot is great for this group of wrestlers. Except for Foley, none of the participants have ever had a chance to hold the big belt, and in my eyes would at the very least be able to hold an entertaining fued for the company’s top spot.

Casket Match: The Rock vs. The Undertaker – Under Pat’s idea of the most marketable Wrestlemania Main Event, I would argue that if Vince McMahon had his choice of any two wrestlers facing off he would choose The Rock over Stone Cold simply because he’s become the most famous wrestler through his success in Hollywood. That being said, he was a great wrestler once, especially on the mic. The Undertaker has not only been a stalwart of the industry for around 20 years, but he’s remained near the top of his game in the ring for most of that time. Whereas guys like Flair and Hogan were simply treading on their names to still be wrestling at their advanced ages, the Undertaker is still one of the better wrestlers today, even if he only works a few times a year. As for this match, the Undertaker is putting his Wrestlemania streak on the line in his trademark match against one of the industry’s best in what should be a very entertaining match.

Triple Threat Elimination WWF Championship Match, No DQ: Bret “The Hitman” Hart (c) vs. Kurt Angle vs. Mr. Perfect – Three of the better in-ring performers in wrestling square off for the most important belt in the business. Maybe, as Pat said, you don’t want Mr. Perfect headlining the main event at the “Ultimate” Wrestlemania, but all I can say is that, again, this is my ultimate wrestling card, and I think Mr. Perfect deserves his shot. The match itself figures to be great in the ring, with three guys who have similar styles that should mesh extremely well. I also really like the concept of the triple threat elimination match, which essentially makes it two different matches in one, and I’ve always been a sucker for elimination anything. Hart and Angle each have resumés that speak for themselves, and as my all-time favorite wrestler, there’s no way that the Hitman’s not headlining my penultimate PPV.
